On Wednesday, 25th September 2019, WRD or water resource department started its drive to remove encroachments in Kakkan Nagar belonging to Aminjikarai, Chennai. This was carried out as a part of efforts to increase the work on the project to restore Cooum River.

It is worthy to mention that WRD has identified as many as252 families to be resettled from the locality along the banks of Cooum River. As per the official of WRD, it is clear that a total of 69 families have shifted to Perumbakkam tenements. It must be taken into account that there was a delay as the residents wanted the same block to be allotted to them.

On Wednesday, the allotment orders were distributed to the residents and on Thursday demolition of the structures would start and the drive would continue in the locality.

Information that has emerged out is WRD would simultaneously clear the encroachments of Pallavan Nagar, Chintadripet on Thursday. From this place, as many as 1000 families would be resettled. It is said that WRD has identified about 14000 structures to be removed along the Cooum Riverbank.

The residents were unhappy that they were not given enough time about the eviction. It was brought out by a resident that the WRD officials informed about the eviction only on Tuesday and on Wednesday itself eviction process was started. The resident later spoke about how she and others were taken to Perumbakkam tenements and how till evening they were not allotted houses.

It was pointed out by another resident that they wanted an entire block for Kakkan Nagar residents. It must be noted that there was a lack of coordination between PWD and TNSCB officials and this caused issues for the residents. Point to be noted is the school students would find it difficult as the families shifted in the middle of the academic year.
