As the traditional practice of observing penance (not eating non-vegetarian items, etc) during the holy Tamil Calendar month of Purattasi has started, there has been a crash in fish price!
The Tamil calendar month of Purattasi is considered sacred and is the month to pray for the Hindu Gods, especially Lord Vishnu, most Hindus observe penance during this month by abstaining from taking meat/non-vegetarian dishes. So, there would be no preparation of meat/egg/fish items in the residences,
Further, there would be widespread rains during this month of Purattasi. The land, which had experienced the severe scorching heat for the last few months would cool down after the rains. So, this month is traditionally observed as the month which releases heat! Thus, most people avoid taking non-veg items.
With the commencement of the Tamil calendar month Purattasi this year, the price of fish has come down drastically.
The usually busy fish market in Kasimedu and Chintadripet remains less crowded. The fishermen explained regarding this:
The quantum of fish transported from Andhra, Karnataka, and Kerala has increased. Further, the commencement of the Tamil calendar holy month Purattasi has set the fish prices backward! As such, we have reduced the quantity of fish that we order and procure from the other states! This will persist till the Deepavali festive period.
