With lots of people traveling to different places in Chennai, the cab aggregators like Ola, Uber etc in Chennai have been prospering superbly now is well known.
Many residents book these cab aggregators by using their mobile apps to reach their places of destination and this had impacted the auto-rickshaws in the Chennai city. It was brought out that the cab aggregators are fleecing the passengers in the name of peak hour pricing by fixing their own rates.
The latest news in the auto-rickshaw unions in Chennai has requested the state transport department to regulate these app-based cab aggregators for the above-mentioned reason. It was revealed by Mr. A.L. Manoharan, state president, Auto Thozhilalar Sangam, north Chennai that he and other union members met senior officials in the transport department regarding this issue. Soon, they would also be meeting the state transport minister Mr. M.R. Vijayabhaskar on this matter.
Mr. Manoharan later spoke about how the auto-rickshaw drivers get affected due to fleecing of cab and auto aggregators in Chennai. The point is the app-based cab and auto aggregators fix their own rates and charge high fares from the passengers in the peak hours. He expressed his unhappiness about the fleecing and spoke about how the government only must fix the fares. He added that it was gross injustice meted out to auto-rickshaw drivers and passengers.
As per a retired official belonging to the transport department, the government had not stepped in for regulating the services. Point is many passengers also felt that the rates for a particular distance varied between the aggregators. It is worthy to note that the auto-rickshaw drivers now feel that their livelihood has been taken away.
It was later revealed by an auto driver of Chintadripet that the passengers do not realize the truth that they were fleeced by the cab and auto aggregators and the passengers pay high amounts demanded by these aggregators. He added that the minimum auto fare is Rs 25 for 1.8 km but some drivers charge Rs 40 because of the high cost of living now.
