Tamil political leaders including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and Governor K. Rosaiah released statements wishing the Tamil Diaspora a Happy New Year.
In her statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, ‘May this New Year strengthen the bonds of unity and usher in peace, progress and prosperity in the state and the nation. (I) convey (my) heartfelt best wishes to Tamil people as well as the Malayalees on the eve of Vishu. (I am) happy about restoring the celebration of Tamil New Year Day on the first day of the Tamil month of ` `Chithirai.` It may be recalled that the previous DMK government had changed the celebration of Tamil New Year day to the Tamil month of `Thai.`’
Dr. Rosaiah said, ‘On the joyous occasion of Tamil New Year, `Vaisaki`, `Baisaki` and `Vishu`, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people. On the dawn of New Year people must take a pledge to shed hatred and develop a resolve to foster good thoughts, compassion and love.’
