The Corporation has announced that Ramky, the city’s garbage collection and disposal company, will collect waste twice a day from houses in Kodambakkam, Adyar and Teynampet. They will also make sure that the garbage bins on the streets are emptied twice a day.

The announcement came in the wake of inspections by Chennai’s Mayor Saidai Duraisamy and Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur. They inspected the collection routine for three hours on Saturday night.

Says a resident, ‘(The) stench and mosquitoes are unbearable. I hope they keep their promise to clean the enclosure twice a day… Now the group bins are cleared every day , but they often empty the bins and not the garbage around them.’

Speaking to the press, a senior official said, ‘Corporation officials hope to reduce the use of garbage bins. Garbage bins start overflowing because households empty their dustbins into them instead of handing waste over to workers… Wherever garbage generation has been found to be high, we have asked them to collect garbage from households in two shifts. If people have an opportunity to hand over waste to workers twice a day, they will not need to use the street bins. Street bins were primarily placed for road users, not residents.’
