The news that the state of Tamil Nadu might get a new technical university to provide affiliation to more than 500 engineering colleges in TN has been the talk of the town.
It is revealed that Anna University or AU that has been providing affiliation to the engineering colleges now would soon get Institute of Eminence status and would lose the affiliation powers. The point to be noted is the rules on affiliation needed further clarification and some months back private engineering colleges wanted a separate university to govern them. This was pointed out by some sources close to the development.
There are as many as 537 engineering colleges affiliated with AU and by this AU is the largest technical university in India. It must be noted that vice-chancellor of AU Mr. Surappa played a huge role in improving the quality of education by initiating many measures like introducing a broken system for students, drafting faculty members from prestigious institutions like IITM, IISC Bangalore, NIT Trichy etc for the annual inspection of the engineering colleges.
It must be taken into account that after visiting 537 engineering colleges the inspection committees had recommended action against 92 engineering colleges. The lack of infrastructure and faculty members have made the university to cut down the student intake by 25% to 50% in 92 engineering colleges. It is worthy to mention that the new university would have a separate affiliation center, controller of examinations office and registrar. It was brought out by the sources that DTE has already initiated steps to set up these centers for the new university.
Point is there were also some discussions to set up as many as 3 technical universities in Chennai, Trichy, and Salem but the things have not moved beyond discussions. The letter of compliance is yet to be provided by the state government for the IoE status of AU.
It was brought out by Mr. Selvaraj, secretary of Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges, that representation to set up a separate technical university has been submitted. He added that neighboring states like AP, Karnataka etc have separate technical universities for the affiliated colleges.
It was later pointed out by Mr. Balaguruswamy, former vice-chancellor of AU that separating from AU would not help the affiliated engineering colleges. He explained the importance of Anna University`s degree and said it was a globally recognized degree and the engineering colleges would lose the advantage of the degree.
