The Sri Lankan Navy has said that they did not arrest 9 fishermen from Pudukottai district as reported in India. The announcement comes in the wake of the Indian media’s reports that the fishermen were arrested while fishing in the sea, and just two days after Sri Lankan authorities released 19 fishermen who were arrested last month.
Early in April this year, the navy arrested 56 fishermen on two different occasions, claiming that the fishermen had violated International Maritime Border laws. They had also attackedsix fishermen on April 12th off the coast of Karaikal.
Sri Lankan Naval Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said, ‘We have not arrested any Indian fishermen anywhere.’
