The moment the place ‘Vandalur’ is mentioned, most of the tourists will think of the zoological park! Now, you have to add the tree park as well!
Most of the family personnel planning a tourism trip in Tamil Nadu including the Chennai Metro City will immediately think of the hill resorts such as Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, and Yelagiri! The main reason for this attraction is the rare variety of plants that grow there apert from the prime reason for the pleasant chilly climate!
During earlier periods, there existed a situation when the personnel indulging in research work on forests while working from Chennai or its surrounding districts needed compulsorily to visit the hill stations for this purpose.
In this situation, for the facility of the research students and the tourists, a ‘tree park’ was set up in Kolappakkam, Vandalur, lying adjacent to Chennai Metro City at a cost of Rs. 2 Crores and inaugurated in the year 2018.
In this tree park, around 150 kinds of trees which grow in the Eastern mountain range, such as Kadukkai, Saandrikkaai, Nellikkai, malaivembu, Madhagiri vembu and another 150 kinds of trees which grow in the Western mountain range such as Shenbagam, Vattakanni, Jaathikkaai, Kraambu, and naval are grown and can be seen.
Out of this, the set of plants/trees which grow in the eastern mountain range have grown quite taller and the kinds of trees familiar in the western range mountains have grown tall to a certain extent.
Further, the ‘tree park’ has a ‘lec-dem’ hall which explains the nature of the above-mentioned trees, artificial fountain, sitting arrangements for relaxation. There is a small island as well in the center of the tree park.
The tree park officials shared in this regard: ‘the plants which grow in the eastern mountain range are the type to growing any kind of climate. That is why they have grown here in the fullest degree!
However, the kinds of plants that grow in the western range of mountains are acclimatized to grow only in cool climates. This is why hey ave grown here to a lesser degree.
Presently, there are around 3000 visitors in a month. If it rains well, the trees will grow better. As a result, we may expect a larger crowd of visitors.
