Earlier, it was said that the 1.4km long pedestrian plaza at Pondy Bazaar in T. Nagar would be opened before the end of the month of October.
The latest news is opening of this pedestrian plaza would be delayed by another week now. This was as per the officials belonging to the Chennai Corporation. It must be noted that this plaza would be opened by chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy and the officials are waiting for the availability of chief minister now.
It has been brought out by some officials of the corporation that the recent demise of the chief minister’s father-in-law and TN state machinery’s focus towards the rescue operations of 2 year old Sujith Wilson (who died after falling into an abandoned bore well in Trichy district) had resulted in the delay in the opening of the pedestrian plaza.
At the cost of more than Rs 33 crores, this pedestrian plaza project began in the middle of 2018 under the Smart City Mission is known. It is important to mention here that this project is aimed to promote non-motorized transport. It was revealed by the officials of Chennai Corporation that similar projects would be undertaken in places like Tondiarpet, Velachery and Anna Nagar etc.
A senior official of the corporation hinted that after the official inauguration of the pedestrian plaza the traffic would be made one way. There are some talks going on with the police and the commercial establishment owners now. Important information is after the inauguration the corporation has planned cultural activities at the plaza to attract more people.
