From this year, a common annual examination would be written by the students belonging to classes 5 and 8. It is now said that some tweaks have been done to the evaluation system for these students of classes 5 and 8 of TN state board schools.
It is worthy to note as per the circular issued by DEE or Directorate of Elementary Education the written examination for class 5 would test the basic concepts, practices and learning outcomes of 3 subjects such as English, Tamil, and Maths. In the same way, the class 8 examination would test the basic concepts, content and learning outcomes of subjects such as Tamil, English, Science, Social Science and English. It must be noted that the papers would be of 60 marks and the class 8 students would be tested for full year’s syllabus at the end of 3 terms. The point is till now these students had just single terms portion for each of the 3 term tests.
The sources belonging to DEE revealed that focus would be on testing basic literacy of the students for class 5. Information is there would be no change in how the remaining 40 marks would be counted for both classes 5 and 8.
It must be taken into account that students average marks scored in 3 formative assessments, their performances in classroom assignments and other activities would be given importance. The important point to be noted is only primary and middle schools having a minimum of 10 students would be made as examination centres for classes 5 and 8. The exam centres for class 5 students would be inside one km radius of their schools so that the students would not be travelling long distances for writing their examinations. For class 8 students, the exam centres would be inside 3 km radius of their schools.
