According to the meteorological department, Chennai city is expected to get more short spells of intense rains in the next 2 days. It is known that Chennai has been getting short spells of intense rains in the last few days.

It is important to note that Nungambakkam recorded 41.4 mm of rains and Meenambakkam recorded 55.6 mm of rains on Wednesday, 30th October. The rains have left the roads in bad shape with water stagnation.

On many inner roads in places like Mylapore, Royapettah, Triplicane, Mandaveli, Kodambakkam, Virugambakkam, etc there was water stagnation in large pools. The corporation workers were very busy with draining out water from major roads.

The slushy, waterlogged inner roads created issues for the two-wheelers as they faced difficulty in driving their vehicles. The important point is people belonging to the suburbs of Chennai were affected badly due to the rains.

It must be taken into account that East Tambaram is connected with GST by means of a pedestrian subway present on the southern side of the Tambaram railway station. It is now said that this pedestrian subway was flooded with at least 4 feet of water and thereby making it unfit for the people to use it.

Tiruttani is about 90 km from Chennai city and this place recorded the highest rainfall recorded in the 24 hours ending at 5:30 pm on Wednesday. A sensational piece of information has Tiruttani recorded 111.8 mm rains. It must be noted that the heavy spell of rain on Tuesday night had also turned the tide of NE monsoon for Chennai city.

Point is the rainfall has gone into a surplus now within just 2 weeks into the NE monsoon. The city of Chennai on Tuesday recorded cumulative rains of 203.6 mm against an average of 239.7mm expected so far in October marking a deficit of 15%. It rained on the Tuesday night and rains through most of Wednesday and has now made the cumulative rain to touch 263.9 mm (surplus of 5%).

As per Mr. Balachandran, deputy director-general of IMD, in the next 48 hours, heavy rains is likely to occur in places like Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Vellore. Other places in TN like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Trichy, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, etc would also get rains.

The important point is Chennai has been getting rains because of the effect of a band of clouds from the well-marked low pressure that formed in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday between north Sri Lanka and TN coast.
