Tamil Nadu Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced that two more sweeping machines will be used to clean Chennai’s roads. There are currently two that are being used – one for Anna Salai and one for Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. He also announced that one sweeping machine each will be given to Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Trichy. The total cost will be Rs. 4.50 crores.
The two new machines are expected to clean Poonamallee High Road and 20 others that include Walltax Road. “The machine can only remove dust off the carriageway. It cannot clean the thick layers along the medians. It will also not work in wet conditions; so cleaning will also have to be done on a manual basis. Similarly, the contractor will also be responsible for cleaning of chutes leading to stormwater drains… The machines are used only at night’, said an official.
