Posted on: 08/Nov/2019 4:20:06 PM
It is alarming news that the air pollution extent in the Chennai Metro City has even exceeded the pollution level in Delhi, so notoriously known for high air-pollution!

Yes! The air-pollution extent has suddenly exceeded in several areas in the city including Velacherry, Manali, Kodungaiyur, and Anna Nagar!

This has greatly affected the children and patients who find normal breathing quite difficult!

The pollution level has been increasing in Delhi especially after the Deepavali festival celebrations.

The National Pollution Control Board has explained that the traditional custom of burning the stubbles accumulated after the harvesting by the farmers from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab.

Further, cases have been booked on more than 20000 persons for burning the stubbles and other agricultural garbage items. Further, the phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles plying on the roads in Delhi and the surrounding states, the numerous construction activities, and the emission of smoke let out from the factories also contribute to high air pollution.

Following this New Delhi Government has been taken several stringent actions to reduce the extent of air pollution.. However, the air pollution level in Delhi has not come down! So, the state government has intensified the controls and regulations in this respect. Generally, only if the air quality index is below 100, it is breath-worthy.

However, as per the data from various agencies including the National Pollution Control Board and some private agencies,  it is established that the air pollution level in the Chennai Metro City has increased manifold as compared even to Delhi!

As at 9.30 AM yesterday, the air quality index in Delhi was 254. However, in Chennai, this was 264!  Children, senior citizens, and patients were put to extreme hardships trying to breathe.

Especially, it can be perceptibly be seen that the minute dust/dirt particles in the air having deposited on the heads and faces and exposed skins of the public! It was clearly ascertained by wiping the face with a kerchief and seeing the stain!

This situation eased gradually by the afternoon session. Some people opined that this sudden increase in pollution is the reflection effect of the Delhi pollution, it is also explained by others that the pollution of emitted particles in the air in Chennai Metro City has become higher.

It is gathered that this high pollution level has not dried up and is stagnated in some particular locations in the atmosphere. Due to this, air pollutioion has been increasing in the Chennai Metro City from 3rd November. The Pollution Control Board has informed this will come down as there would be a change in the direction of the blowing wind.

However, this high-pollution level in the air has severely affected the children, senior citizens, and the patients who find it difficult to breathe.

The pollution Control Board has defined certain procedures to overcome when the air-pollution level is rather high.

According to these conditions:
  • Do not indulge in any outdoor task/activity during the early morning and after sunset.
  • Especially in the afternoon session, if there are complaints of cough, headache and breathing difficulties, stop the work you are doing and take some rest.
  • Keep the windows of the house/working place closed.
  • Keep the room clean.
  • When cleaning the house, use wet clothes to prevent the dust from flying.
  • People with complaints such as asthma must readily keep the required medicine.
The government hospital doctor Balakrishnan shared regarding this:
  • With this high air-pollution, there are prospects of children to elders being affected by an allergy or even asthma. Breathing blocks, heavy breathing and frequently affected by cold are some of the results. There would be an itching sensation on the skins and the skin may get affected.
  • Due to the high density of dust particles in the air, there are prospects of the lungs getting blocked. It is advisable to wear a facial mask. This will prevent dust particles from entering the nose.
  • In order to prevent skin-itch, it is better to wear full-hand shirts.
  • When reentering the house after an outing, wash the hands and legs proper.  Small boils of popsicles may develop on the face because of the fine dust deposit on the facial skin - so, wash the face with good quality water thoroughly.
