Sexual assault cases have been on the rise in the city of Chennai and more women and girls are facing this issue now. To help these sexually assaulted women and girls, Chennai police has now come up with this superb idea.
Special wing named ‘Thozhi’ or friend was launched by the Chennai police. It must be noted that this special wing consists of women police personnel and they would support and provide counselling to the victims and their parents in sexual assault cases (Posco Act) and guide them through legal procedures.
On Friday, 8th November 2019, the Chennai city police commissioner, Mr A.K. Viswanathan grabbed the attention of many at the city police commiserate. He launched this ‘Thozhi’ scheme. It is important to note that he assigned as many as70 policewomen to work in the special wing ‘Thozhi’. These policewomen would be given pink coloured saris embedded with Nirbhaya logo as a mark of safety.
Important information is 2 policewomen would be assigned to each of the 32 all-women police stations in the Chennai city. Keeping track of POSCO case victims plus providing counselling to them and rendering all possible assistance would be done by these policewomen at the all-women police stations. Visiting the sexually assaulted victims periodically would also be done by these ‘Thozhi’ policewomen.
There were few important personalities like B. Vijayakumari, joint commissioner of police west zone, Dr Shalini, psychiatrist, Dr Andrew Jesuraj of Loyola College, H. Jayalakshmi, DCP of crimes against women and children etc, who made their presence felt at the event.
