Gone are the days when a Tamil film would have a hero, heroine, villain, comedy actor, songs, mother sentiments, etc.

It is now said that the Tamil films are going out of this ‘template’ and the moviegoers don’t seem to mind.

The recently released thriller film ‘Kaithi’ had actor Karthi in the lead but it is the ‘storytelling’ that has been drawing huge crowds to the theatres. This film of actor Karthi has become a sensational success at the box office now.

In the same manner, Tamil film titled ‘Oththa Seruppu Size 7’ with actor Parthiban in the lead was appreciated by many all over for its uniqueness. It must be noted that the film had just one actor and it revolved around him. The film entered the ‘Asia Book of Records’ and ‘India Book of Records’ for having a single person acting, writing, directing and producing the film. This film was unique for the Tamil cinema audiences as they had never witnessed such a type of film.

In the last few years, the Tamil film industry also saw some women or heroine-centric films like ’36 Vayadhinilae’, ‘Kolamavu Kokila’ of actress Jyothika and actress Nayanthara respectively. These films did not have a big hero but the films did well at the BO and showed that heroines also have a huge fan base.

The directors now are showing great interest in experimenting and not sticking to the same old formula of having a hero, heroines, villain, songs, etc in the film.

It must not be forgotten that the thriller titled ‘Onaayum Aatukuttiyum’ made by director Mysskin in the year 2013 grabbed many eyeballs for its story and not for the hero or heroines. The truth is younger receptive film audiences have been cited as a reason for this change in the directors in going away from the template to different types of films.
