It is known that Chennai Metro Water Department had increased the water supply by 100 mld 20 days back and this had bought huge relief for many residents of core places.
The latest news is the increase water supply hasn’t reached the residents of the added areas on the Chennai city’s periphery. Point to be noted is places such as Alandur, Thiruvottriyur, Nandambakkam, parts of Mugalivakkam, Puzhuthivakkam, Porur and Ambattur has seen no change in their pipe water supply. The shocking information is the residents in these places even now get water supply once in 2 days and that too for just 1 or 2 hours.
It must be taken into account that the drought situation has become less intense now in Chennai city but water supply to these added areas remain sluggish. Residents of places like Alandur and Ambattur complained that the water supplied was of poor quality. The truth is the ground water levels have gone up now due to the rains and it is said that these residents were managing with the bore well water. Water gets supplied on alternate days for a time of one hour in the morning in places like Alandur, Adambakkam, Mugalivakkma and Porur.
As per a resident belonging to Alandur, it is clear that 2 weeks back the locality received water once in 3 to 4 days and now water is being received on alternative days. He hoped that in the coming days the water supply would improve. Another resident belonging to Thiruvottriyur explained how the water supplied for just one hour once in 2 days was not enough. He wanted the water supply to be increased to another one hour atleast so that his family of four would be benefited.
From 525 mld to 650 mld, the water supply has been increased and it would take a month or two months for the water supply system to get stabilized. This was as per some officials belonging to the MWD. It must be noted that the water supply hasn’t been increased to 830 MLD still so irregularity in water supply is a common occurrence.
