The two major railway stations in Chennai are Chennai Central and Egmore and many people use these 2 stations to go to their places of destination. Now, southern railways are having a plan to make these two railway stations visually impaired friendly as a part of efforts to improve passenger amenities.

At the Egmore railway station, signages would be installed in Braille and this would be the first step that would be taken by the authorities. Later on, this project of making railway station friendly for visually impaired would also be extended to Dr. MGR Central railway station.

Some companies would like to undertake this project as part of their corporate social responsibility scheme and it is now said that this project would be done with the help of these companies. To help the visually impaired people to move around the stations, signages would be converted to Braille.

It is superb to mention here that railways have started installing seat or berth numbers in Braille in the coaches. For installing signage, locations have been given and passenger amenities would be improved by this. This was as per an official.

Point to be taken into account is a company from Bengaluru had inspected Egmore station and examined the location to install the facility. For designing the boards, measurements have been taken. The official hinted about the number of ideas that were discussed at different levels in the railways to rope in corporate and NGO’s etc. It must be noted that there is a huge demand to improve the facilities at the stations.
