It is now said that from 29th of November, the residents belonging to the Chennai city would be getting an additional 20 mld. The reason for this is a new sewage treatment plant would start its operations on that day and the 20 mld being drawn from the reservoir at Chembarambakkam to supply industries would be available for the residents of Chennai.

It is worthy to note that the water from TTRO or Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis plant at Koyambedu, the second facility to come up at Koyambedu, would be distributed to the SIPCOT industrial units in Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur and to Oragadam in Kancheepuram after the plant gets commissioned by the chief minister of TN.

At the Koyambedu plant, all the pipelines have been laid. It is now revealed that the authorities have started doing a trial of flushing the pipelines and commissioning of equipment.

Public Works Department or PWD is currently involved in the distribution of 20 mld from the reservoir at Chembarambakkam and another 25 mld to SIPCOT and later it is sold to companies as per the demand. It was mentioned by an official of PWD that out of 45 mld distributed Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam used to get 12 mld, 10 mld and 20 mld respectively.

In the first week of the month of October tertiary treatment plant was commissioned at Kodungaiyur. Information is this plant and the one at Koyambedu involves RO to contain TDS or total dissolved solids in water to less than 70 mg per litre. The point to be noted here is water is deemed portable if the TDS levels are between 250-500 mg per litre.

The officials have pointed out that out of 550 million litres of sewage generated per day in Chennai as much as 20% is recycled and used by the industries. By this, Chennai city is the first in the world that treats so much of sewage.

The superb piece of information is CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (metro water) is also in the process of setting up TTUF or Tertiary Treatment Ultra-Filtration plant in places like Perungudi and Nesapakkam.
