In the future, if you visit Chennai Egmore railway station, you would be surprised to see waiting halls, escalators, provision of lifts etc in the upgraded form.
The important piece of news is under the station redevelopment programme, Egmore railway station is all set for makeover with up gradation of the passenger amenities. By the month of March in 2020, up gradation works would get completed and this was as per a statement from Chennai division.
It must be taken into account that 3 waiting halls would be provided for the passengers and prepaid a/c hall and second call hall would be equipped with accessible toilet (friendly for differently able people). There would also be separate rooms for feeding the babies and change rooms.
On the first floor, there are 14 bedded a/c dormitories and 16 retiring rooms and these are also getting upgraded. Information is 3 lifts are being constructed and as many as 5 new escalators are being installed on platforms 7, 8 and 9 and entry from Gandhi Irwin Road. At both ends in platforms 10 and 11, 2 escalators would be set up.
People coming to Egmore railway station would be surprised to see two- storey parking space at the second entry. It is revealed that the existing car parking would be shifted near the present wheeler parking location. For the purpose of accommodating locomotives, platforms 5, 7, 8 and 9 are also extended. It is well known that Egmore railway station is one of the four intercity railway terminals in Chennai.
