Various issues that could affect preterm babies are cerebral palsy, mental retardation, blindness, chronic lung disease etc.

The different risk factors associated with preterm are previous pregnancy with preterm birth, abnormal uterus, multiple miscarriages, stress, drug abuse, smoking/drinking during pregnancy etc.

To reduce the risk of having preterm birth, it is important to take a note of these tips.

By keeping sufficient gaps between the pregnancies:
It must be taken into account that the body must be given enough time to recover from one pregnancy to the other. The point is atleast 18 months of gap between the 2 pregnancies is a must. By this, the chances of the baby born prematurely are reduced.

By using effective contraceptives:
This is also one important tip that women must follow without fail. It must be noted that if a woman do not want to get pregnant within 18 months after having a baby, then she must make sure that the contraceptive she is using highly effective. By consulting a gynaecologist, proper guidance would be got in this aspect.

By maintaining healthy weight:
Many women do not know the fact that unhealthy weight could also be the cause of preterm birth. It is revealed that women who are underweight and overweight could have more chances of preterm babies. Maintaining BMI at a healthy level is important.

Alcohols and smoking to be avoided by pregnant women:
By consuming alcohol or smoking during pregnancy, both mother as well as the baby is at high risk. It is said that women who smoke would have more chances of giving birth to premature babies.

By taking care of health conditions:
It is important to note that BP, heart diseases and asthma are regarded as chronic and these must be treated before conceiving. These above said issues could increase the chances of premature birth.
