In order for the enhancement for the green areas in the Chennai Metro City as well as for the protection and facility for the birds, a special bird sanctuary is planned to be set up in Adyar covering 20000 acres, known as Miyawaki.

There exists a 20000-acre land owned by the Chennai Metro City Corporation in Ward 175 near the Kotturpuram Railway Station. A few years ago, this space was mainly used for dumping the garbage. Some people even tried to encroach this area. Subsequently, the Chennai Metro Corporation cleaned up the whole area and put up a fencing 3 months ago.

The Chennai Metro Corporation planned to enhance and greenery and set up a bird sanctuary in this area called  ‘Miyawaki’ to provide the much-needed shelter and protection for the birds.

Presently, the activity of conditioning and treating the soil in the area is in progress.

The corporation officials shared information regarding this project:

‘As a large number of constructions are crowded in Chennai, the environment to birds to live in the present surroundings has been acutely adversely affected and it is a question of survival for them. Considering this important aspect, we have planned to plant 2000 saplings in the above-mentioned 20000-acre area and set up a bird sanctuary.

It has been decided that a group of 4 tree saplings - trees of poovarasu, almond (badaam), punnai, and neem (veppamaram) - at gaps of 2 feet throughout the area. Natural fertilizers such as the desilt waste from cleansing various water resources and the organic manure manufactured by the Chennai Metro City Corporation will be used for growing the trees.

Once these trees grow up, the area will be like a dense forest with greenery and the bird population will also increase.’
