The payment of toll-gate charges through FASTag card system will be mandatory and is set to be implemented from 15th December.

It has been announced earlier that this would be implemented with effect from 1st December. However, now, this date has been revised and it has been announced that FASTag payment mode at the toll-gates will be implemented from 15th December. Thus, the deadline has been extended by 15 days.

Severe traffic jams are created on the National Highways when the vehicles wait in long queues to pay the toll-gate charges. This also affects the movement of goods traffic.

In order to prevent this and also to enhance the transparency in the toll-gate charges collection system, The National Highways has introduced the collection of toll-gate charges as an electronic transaction with FASTag cards.

National Highways is making all-out efforts to implement this new FASTag toll-gate payment system. Accordingly, specially trained officers and staff are to be posted at the toll-gates.

Further, in order to encourage the switching over to FASTag mode, the Central Minister Nitin Gadkari had announced that the FASTag cards can be procured free from the toll-gates until 1st December.

Subsequently, swarms of drivers have been collecting at the various toll-gates to procure the FASTag cards.

Presently, the deadline has been extended up to 15th December.

A notification released by the Ministry of highways in this regard mentions:

With a view to providing additional time for the citizens to procure FASTag cards, it has been decided to collect double the charges from vehicles which pass through the toll-gates without FASTag cards from 15th December.

It has also announced that the FASTag cards would be given free at the sales centres set up in the toll gates till the specified date.
