Tamil Nadu PWD (Public Works Department) Minister K.V. Ramalingam has announced several measures to tackle Chennai’s growing water crisis. Desilting the Veeranam Lake is one major project.
Speaking in the Assembly Mr. Ramalingam said, ‘Owing to accumulation of silt over the years, the storage capacity of the lake had reduced considerably. To restore its capacity to full level of 1,465 million cubic feet (mcft), the state government has sanctioned 40 crore.
‘Many projects were underway to increase water supply to the city (Chennai). A reservoir would be constructed at Kannankottai village in Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district at a cost of 330 crore. The project would connect two existing water tanks in the region to store 1,000 million cubic feet of Krishna water.
‘The government has also given administrative sanction for construction of a check dam across Kosasthalaiyar river at Thirukandalam village in Tiruvallur district at a cost of 35 crore. It is expected that this project would yield an additional 160mcft water for Chennai’
