To check for sewage and effluent contamination at the reservoirs, the PWD officials have done this now.

It must be noted that the PWD officials have taken some water samples from Chembarambakam and Red Hills reservoirs for checking the contamination.  There have been complaints about the industries around these 2 reservoirs discharging un-treated effluents into the water bodies. Following these complaints, the PWD officials have collected the water samples now from these reservoirs.

It is well known that the above mentioned 2 reservoirs form a part of 4 major reservoirs that caters to the Chennai city’s water needs and Chembarambakkam is the largest reservoir with a storage capacity of 3645 mcft.

A PWD official mentioned about how the lakes were inspected after receiving complaints of sewage being let out by Sipcot. He hinted about issuing a notice to Sipcot if the pollutant levels in the samples were found to be on the higher side. Important information collected is around Poondi only agriculture activity is present and till now no complaint has been received regarding Cholavaram and Poondi.

The official later revealed that MWD had also collected water samples for testing purpose and if the pollutant levels are found to be high then the notice would be given and pollution control board would be informed about the pollutant levels. The point here is the pollution control board is the one that has got the authority to penalize offenders.

The storage levels in both Chembarambakkam, as well as Red Hills reservoirs, have increased after the rains over the weekend and on Wednesday the Chembarambakkam storage level stood at of 1103 mcft and Red Hills at 1887 mcft. Last year, on the same day, the Chembarambakkam storage levels stood at 175 mcft and Red Hills at 1082 mcft is known.

A deficit of 27 percent on 27th November was removed and on 2nd December a surplus of 2 percent was provided because of the monsoon performance in Tiruvallur ( at this place 2 reservoirs are located) that picked up speed.  In the same manner, a deficit of 18 percent on 27th November was removed and 15 percent surplus was provided on 2nd December in Kancheepuram.
