On Wednesday, 4th December 2019, revenue officials along with policemen were very busy. They were involved in evicting the squatters from the Cooum banks in Sathyasai Nagar in Thirumangalam.
It must be taken into account that there was tension at this place for some time when the above-said officials destroyed the houses built along the banks of Cooum. There were lots of talks and finally the officials pacified the protestors and brought down the encroaching structures.
The government has identified as many as 222 structures as encroachments in Sathyasai Nagar in Thirumangalam. This was confirmed by an official in zone 8 (Anna Nagar). Information is on Wednesday 623 out of 222 structures were demolished and this demolition process might continue till Friday. It is important to note that the people living in Sathyasai Nagar would be relocated to TNSCB tenements in Perumbakkam where they have been allotted accommodation.
Biometric identification of those to be relocated was taken by the officials and this was done after issuing notices. Resident’s Aadhaar and other details were also collected by the officials. To help CRRT or Chennai River Restoration Trust to take up restoration, encroachments along Adyar River and Cooum River are being removed. During this eviction drive on Wednesday, officials from GCC, TNSCB, PWD and revenue and disaster management were present.
It must not be forgotten that two weeks back Mr Radhakrishnan, commissioner of revenue and disaster management, mentioned that 80 % of the encroachments along Cooum River have been cleared and the river would be free from all the encroachments by this end of the year. It was brought out by the revenue department officials that more than 40 percent encroachments along Adyar River have been cleared.
Till now, out of the total of 16,598 encroachments along the Cooum River, 11,890 encroachments have been removed. Information is out of a total of 11,400 encroachments identified along Adyar River 4515 encroachments have been removed. This was as per an official statement. It is known that CRRT has undertaken the eco-restoration of both Adyar as well as Cooum rivers at a cost of Rs 200 crores.
