With the four reservoirs that supply drinking water to Chennai having only 35 per cent of their capacity, Metro Water is looking at alternate sources. The reservoirs are Poondi, Sholavaram, Red Hills and Chembarabakkam. They have also planned to repair existing tanks that are not usable – only 5928 of the total 9263 tanks are in use.

Sources said, ‘The department was trying to procure 15 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of additional water from Poondi and Tamaraipakkam well fields, besides getting additional 20 million litres per day of water from Neyveli aquifer and 55 million litres per day from other sources in Neyveli.

‘Currently, there (are) 3,102 Mark II pumps of which 1,098 were under repair. These pumps would be repaired before May 15. An additional 2,039 India Mark II pumps would be fixed across the city.

‘The focus was also on the 42 urban local bodies that were newly added under the Chennai Corporation.’
