Onions are being transported from the other places in the state as well as from other states.
As the northeast monsoon seasonal rains intensified and there were incessant rains widespread in Tamil Nadu leading to a lesser yield of onions in the agricultural lands. Only the type of onion likely to rot quickly was available in the market and on top of, the price of this rotting onion increased steadily!
Mainly due to the major reasons of incessant rains, lesser vegetable yield and the great reduction in the quantity of onion transported, the price of onion has been shooting up steadily in the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.
Actually, the price of big onion commenced shooting up right from the 1st week of September quite unexpectedly! During that period, onion was sold at a price of Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 per kg in most areas in the state of Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore.
In this scenario, during the start of November, the price of onion which was in the range of Rs. 25 per kg, shot up and up suddenly trebling this rate, and onion was sold at Rs. 80 per kg! The public was shocked and had to bear this hardship. The rise in onion price was experienced in all major cities in the state including the Chennai Metro City.
Subsequently, the state government intervened and arrange for sales of onion in the farm green consumer shops throughout the state of Tamil Nadu to be sold at a lesser price as compared to the market retail price, at Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 per kg in 2 kinds. Thus, onion was sold in the 79 farm green consumer shops throughout the state fo Tamil Nadu.
However, onion price continued increasing and touched Rs. 100. Onion price increased further to Rs. 120 per kg and later to Rs. 160 per kg.
Now, the central government took the initiatives to arrange import 1.20 Lakhs tons of onions.
In this situation, at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the price of onion has shot up further from Rs. 160 per kg to Rs. 180 per kg and the price of small onion has also shot up from Rs. 180 per kg to Rs. 200 per kg.
