An incredible feat has been performed! Yes! The 25-years old garbage problem persistent at Poonamallee has been solved by adopting the ‘Bio Mining’ technology. The garbage has been successfully removed!
With this, a land area of 1.5 acres, owned by the corporation, has been recovered.
Poonamallee Corporation has 21 wards. A total of 21 tons of garbage is collected every day.
Even when Poonamallee was administered as a major city corporation, the area of 1.5 acres, located near Parivakkam, was used for dumping this garbage. This practice has been continued for the last 25 years! As such, over 20000 tons of garbage was accumulated in this area making a ‘garbage mountain’! As such, there were the natural expected harmful effects on the cleanliness and public/residents health front in this area.
As the heap of collected garbage was frequently lit up, there was extremely harmful smoke emission with the local public exposed to this hardship. As such, there were protests to stop dumping the garbage in this area, the garbage was being taken to Thiruverkadu godown.
Meanwhile, a decision was taken to adopt the ‘Bio Mining’ technology segregating the garbage and remove t a cost of Rs. 1.87 Crores.
This project started in August 2018. The ‘Bio Mining’ method is a technology adopting simple scientific application done quickly.. The staff will collect the garbage and dump it on the bio equipment. When the garbage is carried along the conveyor, items such as plastic, iron, metal, and sand would get automatically segregated. Sand, small rocks, glass bottles, plastic and cement bags will also get segregated.
Out of this, the non-bio-degradable items such as plastic items and clothes would be transported to the cement factory. During this process, as the ‘pre-processing’ is done adopting the ‘bio-culture’ system, the local residents will not be affected by harmful effects such as foul odour, etc.
Presently, this project has got completed. The entire garbage mount has been removed and the land of 1.5 acres has been recovered! This also ensures that the local public will no longer suffer for the health issues experienced over the last 25 years!
It has been decided to set up water storage tanks in the above-recovered area and distribute this water to the local residents!
Meanwhile, the garbage collected from the residential areas will be segregated as bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable categories. Bio-degradable garbage will be used to produce fertilizers. The non-bio-degradable lot will be sent to the cement factory.
