The state government of Tamil Nadu had requested the Airport Authority of India to conduct a detailed inspection/survey regarding the possibilities of locating the new Chennai Metro City International Airport at Mamandur or Paranthur, located near Chennai.

Accordingly, the Airport Authority of India Officials had undertaken the survey/inspection at the above-mentioned places.

As per their report, it is gathered that there are possibilities to set up the new 2nd Airport at Paranthur, Kanchipuram district. An area of 4700 acres has been identified covering Paranthur and 12 adjacent villages.

It is expected that the final approval for setting up Chennai’s 2nd airport at Paranthur may be obtained within a week.

During this preliminary survey, it has been established that there no major objections/disputes regarding setting up the 2nd airport here.

Paranthur is located at a distance of 60 km from the Chennai Meenambakkam Airport. So, the passengers need to undertake travel for 0ne-and-a-half hours from Meenambakkam to Paranthur.

The Airport Authority of India officials shared in this regard:

‘The state government owns 50% of the land that has been located for setting up the 2nd airport. So, the balance 50% land, owned by others has to be acquired. As regards the option of Mamandur, there is a water reservoir source very near. This may offer a tough challenge during the construction of the new airport if undertaken here. So, Paranthur was selected. The setting up of the 2nd airport will be taken up with contribution/share of the public as well the private agencies.’
