The Greater Chennai Corporation has taken a decision to impose heavy penalties on the public who throw garbage as they please in public places from the next year.
Once this proposal to impose penalties for throwing garbage in public places is approved by the state government of Tamil Nadu, this will be implemented immediately.
5220 tins of garbage are collected daily by the Greater Chennai Corporation. This garbage is segregated into 2 categories - bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable.
Bio-degradable garbage is used to produce fertilizers and methane.
Non-bio-degradable garbage is used for recycling.
As of now, only 60% of the Chennai Metro City residents segregate the garbage and give.
As such, the Greater Chennai Corporation has now taken a decision to impose an Act regarding solid waste management and implement it.
According to this Act, charges can be imposed on people who create garbage and penalty can be imposed on the public who throw garbage as they please and also the residents who do not segregate the garbage into the 2 above-mentioned categories and give!
The Greater Chennai Corporation has sought approval for this from the State Government of Tamil Nadu.
Once the State Government of Tamil Nadu approves, it intends to implement this from January 2020!
