The news that has come out now is WRD or Water Resources Department is waiting for the funds for tackling Ennore estuary sedimentation. It is now said that the proposal seeking a permanent solution to the sedimentation in Ennore estuary and sustainable opening of the mouth hasn’t taken off still.

As a temporary measure, WRD has taken up the de-silting of the mouth is known. The important information collected is residents of Ennore want the project to be implemented soon for free water flow as well as for the smooth movements of boats.

For the purpose of finding a solution for the sedimentation issue, WRD has taken the help of NIOT. The point is the proposal is awaiting funds tie-up with Kamarajar Port Trust. In addition to this, WRD has also sought funds under World Bank aided flood mitigation project.

The dredging works have not been carried out periodically and as a result of this sand, bars continue to block a large extent of the mouth. It is known that this mouth is the confluence point of the Kosasthalaiiyar River and sea. Once the funds are sanctioned, the de-silting works would be taken up to dredge the Ennore mouth. This was confirmed by some officials belonging to WRD. With an amount of nearly Rs 70 lakhs sought from KPL, silt from the mouth has been removed. It is now brought out that till the month of December that Ennore mouth would be kept free of siltation for a width of up to 80 m. By this, there would be better tidal action as well as the free flow of water.

It has been revealed that the execution of the project would help dredge the estuary and would have the mouth open up to a width of 600 m. For the sake of reducing sedimentation, training wall would be constructed on the north and on the south sides of the mouth.

Wall would be built in such a way that it withstands the strong wave action and a combination of boulders and tetrapods would be utilized for this work. The superb information is there would be better access for the boats.

At present, the fishermen have limited access to the sea and the lack of dredging in Ennore mouth had affected the livelihood of the fishermen in 8 hamlets. This was according to Mr Dilli of Nettukuppam Fishermen Cooperative Society. He threw light on the loss of lives of few fishermen because of rough sea conditions.
