How would you feel if you come to know that the garbage that is being thrown away would bring money to you by means of auction? Happy isn’t it!!

The latest information is Chennai residents are now using a mobile application and by this, they are buying as well as selling their waste. It is important to note that there are few buyers who are interested to strike deals from neighbouring states like Telangana etc and even from Malaysia.

India`s first online market place for waste started by GCC has got as many as 500 buyers and 150 sellers now and the name for this online market place is ‘Madras Waste Exchange’.  Micro composting centres plus GCC based resource recovery centres are registered as sellers.

The information about the waste that has been available in the city of Chennai could be got from the mobile application. It is known that a few days back chief corporation commissioner Mr G. Prakash launched this mobile app for the sake of people.

It is worth mentioning that this project has been developed by Azhagu Pandian Raja MP, smart cities mission, under the supervision of Mr G. Prakash, Mr Kunal Kumar, mission director for smart cities, Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, deputy commissioner of a corporation (Health) etc. To develop this mobile app, the amount of Rs 2 lakhs has been spent with help from volunteers as well as freelancers. This move by GCC has been appreciated by many. Point to be noted is the civic bodies present in Goa, Thane and Nagpur want to replicate the model developed by GCC.

It was pointed out by an official of GCC that the UNDP office in India also wanted to replicate this model. The municipal administration department and officials belong to the corporation are having high hopes about this project and now they want to bring out a TN waste exchange platform.

Just similar to how a food delivery app works by revealing the restaurants that are available, this app developed by GCC also works by revealing the sellers and waste products on sale. The waste products would range from 10 kg of thermocol to garden waste to 100 kg of segregated kitchen waste that is ready to be converted to manure.

Quoting the prices of the waste would be done by using the mobile app and it is revealed that bidding wars would be there. Based on the demand and supply, the prices would be decided by the buyers and sellers. The superb piece of information is there would be a reduction in the waste collection work by the corporation and the waste would not be dumped in the landfills. This was as per Mr Azhagu Pandian Raja. In future, there would also be route optimization feature to help the buyer’s access sellers fast.
