The point is the airfares have increased for the smaller towns on this Christmas Eve. It is said that the trains are fully booked and this has been given as the reason for the increase in the airfares. It must be noted that the flight ticket rates from Chennai to places like Trivandrum, Madurai, and Bengaluru are nearing Rs 10,000 for travel on Christmas Eve. For the travel on 30th December and for New Year, the fares are in the range Rs 6000 to Rs 8000.
On Tuesday, the starting flight fare is Rs 10,000 for places like Madurai, Kochi, Hubli and Trivandrum and Rs 16,000 for Tuticorin. For 30th December travel, the flight fares are in the range of Rs 4000 to Rs 8000 to Tuticorin, Kochi and Trivandrum Rs 3000 to Rs 6000 to Madurai, Rs 3400 to Rs 5000 to Bengaluru, Rs 2300 to Rs 4300 to Coimbatore.
The sensational piece of information is the flight fares to places like Madurai and Tuticorin have touched Rs 5500 and Rs 4700 respectively for the Pongal. The Pongal festival is more than 20 days away is known. The directorate general of civil aviation had issued an instruction to the airlines that the flight fares must not cross Rs 10,000 on the domestic routes. In spite of this instruction, air travel is still not affordable for many.
It was later revealed by an official belonging to an airline that schedules are designed in such a way to attract lots of passengers. There is a high demand for small routes like Hubli and Tuticorin in the festival season and in the holidays and it is said that the flight fares are high on these small routes.
The less number of passengers on the Chennai-Trivandrum route has made the airlines to reduce the frequency. For this Christmas to travel to Kerala, the train fares have touched Rs 2000. Important point is railways have been introducing special trains but people go on flights because some trains are not operated on convenient dates.
