Smartphones have become part and parcel of the lives now and everything could is be carried out by using smartphones these days.  The sensational piece of news is smartphones could be used to buy metro train tickets in Chennai city.

By using smartphones to buy metro train ticket it is possible that commuters could avoid long queues, avoid giving cash or tokens etc. The point to be taken into account is in addition to buying metro train tickets the smartphones could also be used to check balance, recharge smartcards etc

New ticket options in the existing mobile app would be launched by CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited and by this the commuters would be able to avoid waiting in the long queues to get the ticket for their travel.

By linking the smart card with near field communication or NFC connectivity in their smartphones, the commuters would be able to check their balances and recharge smart cards easily. It is revealed that the commuters could also purchase QR code-based e-ticket by using their CMRL app and tap their phone at the ARC or automatic fare collection point before entering the platform.  It was brought out by an official belonging to CMRL that the NFC option would be launched in the mobile app in 2 or in 3 weeks of time and in another 6 months QR code-based ticketing would also be available for the commuters.

There would be an up-gradation of CMRL mobile app in the month of January and the commuters would be able to tap their smartcards on their smartphones. Balances could be checked by means of NFC connectivity that is available in most of the smartphones.

Till now, only at the kiosks at the metro stations, the commuters were able to check their travel history and past transactions by standing in the long queues. The important information is soon commuters would be able to do the above mentioned by using their smartphones itself.

It is superb to note that the planned QR code would completely do away with the smartcards as well as long queues at the ticket counters and kiosks at the metro stations. It is known that the commuters now stop at kiosks to tap their card and to update it with the recharged amount. Tickets could be purchased by the commuters by their debit as well as credit cards by using the app.

It is said that after receiving the QR code ticket in the app, commuters could tap their mobile phones at the AFC gate to enter the platform level. For launching a QR code ticket system in the existing mobile app, the tender has been awarded.
