On Sunday, as many as 120 families were evicted from the Sathyavani Muthu Nagar. The news that has come out is on Monday the evictions were stopped.

There is a belief among some residents that the stopping off evictions was due to VCK chief, Mr Thirumavalavan’s discussions with the deputy chief minister of TN Mr O. Paneerselvam. The officials have revealed that they have not received any official instructions to suspend the evictions till the month of May.

An official later spoke about how the evictions were stopped because the Chennai city police were busy with the elections and mentioned that there was a shortage of transportation.

The residents have sought time till the month of May for evictions for the sake of allowing many first-generation students to finish their schooling.

It is now said that the residents are to be resettled at the TNSCB at Perumbakkam that is 30kms away. As a part of Cooum river restoration project under CRRT, as many as 2092 families would be evicted from the Sathyavani Muthu Nagar in batches is known. This Sathyavani Muthu Nagar is situated opposite to Islands grounds and is one of the largest and oldest slums in Chennai and has got 2092 families living there.
