Northeast monsoon season to last 4 more days: 2019 rains 4% less

The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, Balachandran, informed that the northeast monsoon rainy season will persist for 4 more days.

The director had a session with the press this afternoon (Tuesday, 31st December). He informed further that there are prospects for light to medium rain for the next 4 days in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

He observed that the rainfall from this year’s northeast monsoon rainy season has been lesser by 4% compared with the average. The expected rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is 943 mm but the actual rainfall has been only 907 mm. However, the rainfall has been more than average in 6 districts in Tamil Nadu.

During the interview, the director recalled that there were 8 cyclones/storms during 2019, 3 in the Bay of Bengal region and 5 in the Arabian Sea region.

The rainfall recorded in the northeast monsoon rainy season in 2019 was 454 mm. A maximum rainfall, in excess by 65% as compared with average expected rainfall has been recorded in Nilgiri district. In Permabalur, the rainfall was 28% lesser than average.

In the last 24-hours, a maximum rainfall of 9 cm rain has been recorded in Kollidam (Nagappattinam district) and Periyakalappattu (Puducherry district). Rainfall recorded in other areas in cm: Seerkazhi (Nagapppattinam district) - 6 and Puducherry - 4.
