It has been brought to light by the officials belonging to Water Resource Department or WRD that Chennai city would continue to get Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh without any problem till the month of February. Important point is the counterparts in AP have promised to release 600 to 650 cusecs of Krishna water till February.

By this, Chennai would accumulate around 7 tmcft of Krishna water and it would be the first time in the last 5 years that Chennai would be touching the mark in a single spell.

From the month of July till October, Chennai city is supposed to get 8000 tmcft of Krishna water and this is according to Telugu Ganga project.  On 25th September only, water was released from the Kandaleru reservoir and this was due to the lack of water in the reservoirs. Important information gathered is Poondi reservoir has been getting 650 cusecs and till now around 3.5 tmcft has been received.

The total storage levels of Somasila and Kamdaleru reservoirs are 73 tmcft and 68 tmcft respectively. The Somasila reservoir and Kandaleru reservoir were three fourths full on Tuesday and the storage levels were 66 tmcft and 43 tmcft respectively.

As per a senior official of PWD, in the last 15 years Chennai received around 7 tmcft in a single spell just 3 or 4 times. He added that till now AP government has given just 8 tmcft in a single spell just only once and how most of the times it was just 4.5 to 5 tmcft. The combined storage of Chennai’s 4 reservoirs stood at 5.63 tmcft on Tuesday and Red Hills reservoir had a maximum of 2.43 tmcft of water.

To recover from the severe water crisis, Chennai depended on Krishna water plus rains. Next summer season would be relatively easy for the residents of Chennai if Chennai continues to get good inflow of water. Chennai would accumulate around 7 tmcft of Krishna water if AP provides water till the month of February. In that case, Chennai city would be touching the mark in single spell for the first time in the last 5 years.
