Passengers demand a special train from Chennai/Coimbatore to Rameswaram for Pongal!

The public has demanded that the Railways should arrange special trains for the rather poor workers’ families who are employed in the districts of Chennai, Coimbatore, and Tirupur to various places.

More than a lakh of workers from the rather backward districts of Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai are employed in lower cadres in the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode in textile, automobile, and ready-made clothes manufacturing centres.

Apart from this, a large number of students are studying in the academic institutions in Thiruchengodu and Andhiyur. For these students who would like to visit their native places for the Pongal festival, there are no direct trains available.

Thus, the hardship of large crowds of passengers waiting in the bus depots and bus stands for hours together has been seen for the past several years.

Because of this hardship, most of the families visiting their native places reach their destinations mostly only by the afternoon on the Pongal festival day!

Following this, the public has put up a demand that special trains must be operated especially for the residents/students/workers in Chennai Metro City to directly reach Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram.

The passengers shared that the Salem/Madurai Divisional Offices have not taken any action to introduce/operate trains direct to Rameswaram through the broad-gauge track work has been completed from Madurai to Coimbatore/Pollachi several years ago.

Thousands of families who have shifted their families because of their jobs in the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, and Tirupur has been suffering due to the lack of train facility!

Because of this unfortunate situation, train travel facility seems to be a far-distant dream for the residents of the Southern Tamil Nadu District.

The Railway administration operates special trains only from Chennai to Southern districts. However, they do not operate special trains for the thousands of families of employees who work in the industrial cities of Coimbatore, Erode, and Tirupur.

Just like the special train operated from Nagercoil to Coimbatore, if a special train is operated from Coimbatore to Rameswaram via Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, and Madura, it would be extremely beneficial for thousands of families.

So, Southern Railway must initiate the administration to operate special trains as above.”

As the festival of Pongal falls on Wednesday, 15th January, the passengers expect that a special train must be operateded from Coimbatore to Rameswaram and for the return trip, the special train should be operated on 19th January Sunday from Rameswaram to Coimbatore!
