Ever since the state government had made physical activity compulsory for the students, physical education or PE teachers are overburdened. It is known that this compulsory physical activity is done before and after school hours.

According to Mr Sankara Perumal, a leader of Tamil Nadu Physical Education Teachers Association, there are 1700 PE teacher vacancies in higher and higher secondary schools alone. For conducting regular classes, the teachers are forced to work additional hours. He mentioned about the presence of as many as 9500 sanctioned PE teachers posts in TN schools and how 6500 posts were filled. Inspite of temporary teachers serving many schools, as many as 1700 vacancies still exist.

There were some doubts in a PE teacher (government school in K.K. Nagar) mind regarding monitoring students during the regular classes due to lack of PE teachers. He was of the view that conducting extra physical training for the entire school every day would not be possible.

In the year 2017, TRB conducted an entrance test to fill the PE teacher’s vacancy in the government schools in TN and even after 2 years the posts have continued to be vacant. At various government schools in TN, the 2017 entrance test was held for arts, PE, music and tailoring teacher appointments.

A year back only, the final list was released. It must be taken into account that the candidates who were left out alleged foul play in the selection process. This resulted in the entire process getting stalled. The shocking information is many teachers who had quit their jobs from the private schools after the release of merit list lost their jobs.

A selected candidate belonging to Virudhunagar expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how he was left with no job currently as the selection process was stalled. This candidate previously worked in a school and for the sake of government post he had quit the job from that school.

A Pending petition in the Madras High Court against the final merit list has been the cause for the delay in the postings. This was according to a senior official of the school education department.
