Due to meet the additional demand due to the Pongal Festival travel rush, the State Transport Corporation will operate more than 16000 buses from various locations in Chennai.
The State Transport Minister M R Vijayabhaskar informed in this regard: ‘More than 8 lakhs passengers are expected to travel during the Pongal holidays and as such, 10000 special buses will operate in other districts from 12th to 14th January.
17 reservation counters are to be set up in the Koyambedu Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), Tambaram MEPZ, and Poonamalle Bus Terminus. Tickets can also be booked online - www.tnstc.in or through Apps such as Redbus, Paytm, Make My Trip and BusIndia. All passengers will receive text information about the boarding point and time.
Temporary bus stands will be set up at different locations in the city for the smooth operation of the above special buses.
Buses taking passengers to Thanjavur and Kumbakonam via Vikravandi, Panruti will depart from the temporary bus stand at Tambaram.
Poonamalle bus stand will be the start point for buses going to Hosur, Arcot, Vellore, Kanchipuram, and Cuddalore, and Chidambaram buses (via Puducherry) will depart from KK Nagar bus stop.
Buses to Andhra Pradesh will leave from Madhavaram. Only South-bound buses will depart from CMBT.
The minister further informed, ‘Temporary traffic diversions, introduced 4 years ago, will be followed this year too. Also, to avoid chaos at Toll Plazas, one exclusive lane has been earmarked for the above special buses.
