Metro water department or MWD wants to reduce pollution in the waterways plus to improve sewer network. It is now said that MWD is having plans to provide over one lakh new sewer connections in Chennai city and in added areas in another 6 months.
In the areas identified in the Chennai city, MWD is waiting for the government order for executing the projects. Various areas in Chennai that would be given sewer connections are Ambattur, Ullagaram, Puzhuthivakkam, Madhavaram, Puthagaram, Nolambur and Sholinganallur. It was later mentioned by some officials that nearly 11.000 sewer connections need to be effected in core places in Chennai.
For the sake of getting sewer connections, the customers could dial the services like ‘Azhaithal Inaippu’ and ‘Illanthorum Inaippu’ scheme launched by the water agency. The water connections would be provided to the customers without seeking any documents and bills could be paid later.
People belonging to the added areas could get sewer connections as a part of the underground drainage scheme without any application. The residents could pay their bills in 10 instalments in 5 years. In Chennai in both added as well in core places, people are showing more interest now in getting sewer connections and MWD received nearly 4100 calls in the last one month from the people regarding the sewer connections.
In some areas, work to provide sewer connections is going on and in another 15 days, the work would be over. This was according to an MWD official. Every year, MWD receives only 10000 applications for sewer or water connections on an average. There are nearly 8.5 lakh consumers in Chennai city and in the added areas.
Initially, under the scheme, MWD plans to provide sewer connections in buildings up to 2 floors. The residents in the added areas want the scheme to be extended up to apartment complexes also.
