In the month of June in 2019, a crime against women and children wing (based on the order from Supreme Court) was formed and it caught the attention of many.

This wing has been doing its work superbly and it has registered 292 cases that included 137 Posco cases, 10 rape cases, 30 dowry harassment cases and 115 women harassment cases. The formation of crime against women and children wing has benefited the 35 All Women Police Stations or AWPS plus regular police stations in Chennai. The regular police stations focus on crime prevention and ensuring law and order and the AWPS are involved in the safety of women and children now.

Deputy Commissioner of police, the special wing for a crime against women and children, H. Jayalakshmi, spoke about the efficiency of the department. She revealed how 26 offenders were booked under the Goondas Act and how convictions were got in 25 cases. It must be noted that the police department works in association with other departments like social welfare, social defence, courts and child and women rights activists and organizations etc.

In the past, AWPS was under the jurisdiction of assistant commissioner of police and deputy commissioner of police but now AWPS is under commissioner, additional commissioner and H. Jayalakshmi. This was according to Mr Viswanathan, commissioner of police.

Police personnel who are at the regular police stations need not bother about cases regarding missing women, Posco, harassment etc. These police personnel could concentrate more on community policing, patrolling and crime prevention etc. This was brought out by Mr Prasanna Gettu, managing trustee, PCVC or International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care.

There is now a change in the way AWPS treat the complaints as they do not have to bother about other duties. Those who have given complaints to AWPS are now seeing the difference. In the past, most police personnel would have gone on bando bust duty but now there are some police officers at the station. This was as per a complainant. It is revealed that presently there are 500 police personnel and atleast 1230 more police personnel are needed for the efficient functioning of AWPS.
