Pallavaram municipality is now making news for wrong reasons.

Garbage is collected from many houses in Pallavaram municipality and is not dumped at a designated spot. The garbage is sent to dump yard south of the Pallavaram Periya Eri.

It was later mentioned by a social activist and resident of Pallavaram municipality, Mr David Manohar, that he took pictures of vehicles ferrying garbage from the houses and emptying it in the dump yard. He added that this has been taking place for the past few days. To help restore the water body, the legacy waste in this dump yard is supposed to be bio-mined.

It must not be forgotten that Tambaram and Pallavaram municipalities were pulled up by NGT or National Green Tribunal for dumping waste in Vengadamangalam yard present in Vandalur- Kelambakkam Road. The waste from Tambaram and Palllavaram municipalities would be sent to a waste-to-energy plant in Vengadamangalam and this was decided in the year 2015.

It was also said that from various houses, wastes would be collected and sent to transfer station for compression and then sent to Vengadamangalam yard. There were many lapses in the working of a private contractor and the work was stopped is known.

Many nearby residents protested against the frequent fires that broke out in the dump yard leading to pollution. This was shown by the reports of TNPCB. From September 2019, there has been no dumping of garbage in Vengadamangalam.

The residents were shocked to see garbage being dumped in the lake. It was revealed by an official belonging to Pallavaram municipality that they were in talks with the Perungudi dump yard that is under GCC control for garbage transfer.

Major mismanagement at the Vengadamangalam yard and in the bio-mining project in Pallavaram municipality was brought out by a resident and former councillor of Pallavaram municipality.
