Gone are the days when the students came to the schools with an analogue wristwatch on their hands and they knew the value of time.
This is now a digital age and the kids now seem to be forgetting the art of reading a clock. This has worried many educators and psychologists.
These educators and psychologists were of the view that knowing to read an analogue was a basic mathematical life skill and the lack of knowledge is concerning.
According to Ganga Natarajan, principal of SAN Academy, by observing the hour and minute hands, the children could learn about passing of time and its value. She mentioned about how many children now are used to digital watches and find tough reading the time from an analogue watch.
She added that the students feel that there was no difference but actually there is a difference between analogue and digital watch. Important information is this school now insists all the students use analogue wristwatch and discourages the use of digital wristwatches.
It was pointed out by Shobha Raman, principal of Vidya Mandir School that the students found it tough to read the analogue wall clock and hence could not know about the time left in the examinations. She spoke about how the school does not have any digital clocks and also in the exam halls. A parent revealed how her son could not read an analogue clock and hence replaced the analogue clocks with digital clocks in the house.
P.S. Senior School principal, Revathy Parameswaran mentioned that the children could read the analogue clock only when they see it every day and it should be practized. She explained how in her school the students could wear both analogues as well as digital watches and how getting exposed to both the watches concept would be superb for the students.
