The sacred day of the New Moon in the Tamil calendar month of ‘Thai’ falls on 24th January. This is the day traditionally considered most auspicious to pay our respects to our ancestors who have passed away. By offering the prayers and the other items, we seek and get the blessings and well-wish of our ancestors as per the Hindu traditional folklore.

It is also observed that those who fail to pay the respects to the ancestors on this sacred day are supposed to be cursed! The Sastra s or the classic documents say that physically disabled children are born in the houses of these people who failed to pay obeisance to the ancestors on the holy day of ‘Thai Amavasai’ (New Moon Day).

The traditional prayers and offerings are done on this sacred day performing ‘Tharpanam’ will do immense good to the dynasty or the generations of the person concerned!

‘Performing ‘Tharpanam’ is offering of water and sesame seeds to the ancestors.

The significance or power of the sesame-water violates the Earth’s gravity conditions and goes up and reaches the Pithru Lokam’ (our dead ancestors’ abode).

The power of this holy offering of sesame seeds-water assumes multiple proportions on the sacred day of ‘Thai Amavasai’!
