The ‘Thithi’ (timing) of the ‘Amavasai’ (New Moon Day) occurs at early morning at 3.06 AM.  This sacred day is considered to be the most ideal for offering prayers and ‘Tharpanam’ to the departed ancestors/elders!

The prayers and offerings can be performed from 8.25 AM to 9.48 AM. Apart from these best times, the prayers and ‘Tharpanam’ can be offered any other time during the day except the periods of ‘Rahu Kalam’ and ‘Yama Gandam’.

On the sacred day of the New Moon Day falling in the Tamil calendar month of ‘Thai’, it is traditional to offer food and new clothes to our departed elders/ancestors and then donate these offerings to the poor or deprived community people. This will ensure good benefits in one’s personal life! Auspicious happenings will occur in the family. Long-time sufferings due to diseases will go away! The mental tension and anxiety will vanish!  The mind will be full of peace and happiness!

This ‘Tarpanam’ or prayer/offerings fort eh departed elders/ancestors can even better be performed in such holier places as Thiruppullani, Kodiyakkarai, Poompuhar, Thiruvenkaadu, Trichy ‘Amma Mandapam`, Tiruchendur, and Bhavani Kooduthurai.
