In the future, if you go to places like Nungambakkam, Velachery and Madhavaram, you might be able to see new parks with lots of greeneries.

Within 6 months of time, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would be involved in setting up of three new parks in the above-said places in Chennai. This would boost the Chennai city’s green cover.

An amount of Rs 12.5 crores would be used to set up three parks in Chennai city and tenders would be floated soon. This was confirmed by a senior official belonging to GCC.

S. V. Mani Nagar 3rd Street present in Madhavaram would get a park covering an area of 565.2 sq m and a number of Rs 48 lakhs would be spent for this sake. Likewise, a new park would be set up on Ruthland Gate Second Street in Nungambakkam and it would cover an area of 1235.65 sq m and an amount of Rs 53.9 lakhs would be spent.

For the project of building new parks, GCC is making funds from the union governments ‘Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation or AMRUT’. Previously, AMRUT funds were utilized by GCC well and it is now said that the current tranche of funds is released as an incentive of the good work done by the civic body.

The fact is under the AMRUT funds GCC had constructed as many as 8 parks in 2015-16, 24 parks in 2016-17 and 29 parks in 2017-18 and the total amount of Rs 37.74 crores have been utilized effectively. This is an amazing feat not achieved by any other civic body in the state of TN.

Under AMRUT, as per the park standards, there would be 70 % greenery present in the parks. These parks would have children’s play equipment like swing, sea-saw, RWH structures, footpaths, pebble walk, mulch pit and animal structures made from re-usable material etc. There would also be atleast 4 CCTV cameras at the parks.
