Increase in the monthly pension from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 for the differently able people was promised by the TN state government last year is known. In addition to this, the government also said that it would provide motorised wheelchairs to those people with severe locomotor based issues. It is revealed now that both these promises have not been fulfilled by the state government.
A resident with muscular dystrophy belonging to Saidapet spoke about how she has been struggling to avail both these. The pension amount of Rs 1000 was not enough to meet her requirements. She expressed her unhappiness regarding the differently able welfare department’s lack of efforts to provide her a wheel chair. Another differently able resident of Guindy has also not received these above said benefits till now.
It was announced by the state government that it would increase the monthly disability allowance for Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 (half of the amount to be given to caretaker or relative of the differently able person). Just the 800 beneficiaries, who can avail this assistance has been prepared by the government. The above said Guindy based person was turned away by the authorities due to the fact that his name was not preset in the list. He explained about how desperate he was in need of the amount and he had written to all the authorities concerned.
Through the department for welfare of the differently able, the state government provides a monthly assistance to one lakh differently able persons in TN. The amount provided by the state government has not been received on correct time.
Less than 200 differently able persons in TN received motorised wheelchairs but the state government had promised that it would provide 1000 motorised wheel chairs in 2017. For the purpose of repairing the faulty wheel chairs, the Spinal Injured Persons Association had written to the department to arrange service centres. The faulty wheel chairs had resulted in serious injuries to a beneficiary.
For providing more wheel chairs, the officials from the department mentioned that they have been waiting for the funds from the government.
