High vehicle density is present in the stretch from Porur to Kathipara along Mount-Poonamallee High Road. There are many IT parks, educational institutions and hospitals present here.
It is common to witness many road accidents in this place due to traffic violation. On Tuesday, police installed 121 CCTV cameras and 8 ANPR or Automatic Number Plate Recognition to prevent traffic violations.
An amount of Rs 30 lakhs has been spent for installing these CCTV cameras at every 50 m on the junctions like Kathipara flyover, Butt Road, Nandambakkam, Ramapuram, Mugalivakkam and Porur.
There are certain places where the motorists tend to cross at high speeds in the odd hours and at places ANPR cameras have been set up by the police personnel.
Every day, more than 1.75 lakh vehicles cross the Ramapuram traffic signal at Mount- Poonamallee High Road on an average and this is officially the most congested traffic junction in the city of Chennai. The stretch below Porur flyover with 1.27 lakhs vehicles cross is the second most congested.
The traffic police have not able to catch the traffic violators in the stretch between Porur and Kathipara due to the presence f less number of cameras. Various traffic violations are jumping a signal, violating stop line rules, riding triples and driving over speed etc.
By reading the number plates of the violating vehicles, owner details could be traced easily now using ANPR cameras. Later, e-challans for fines could be issued to these traffic violators. It is possible to build a database of vehicles plying on the roads and book violators without the presence of police personnel on the roads. Stolen vehicles could also be got back easily. There would be photographs of vehicles violating the traffic rules attached to the e- challans. Transport department database would have a link with the cameras and automatic serving of e-challans would be done.
