In some persons, their ability to digest lactose gets reduced and these persons are known as lactose intolerant persons. It must be taken into account that lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose for digestion and inability to produce enough lactase results in this lactose intolerance.
To deal with this issue, it is important that a person must consume reduced milk, cream etc. This issue is more prevalent in adults.
These symptoms reveal that a person is lactose intolerant.
Constipation issue:
It is important to note that lactose intolerance could result in constipation, stomach discomfort, bloating etc. In the colon, undigested lactose gets fermented by the bacteria. Lack of fibre in the diet could also lead to constipation issue.
General symptoms:
Instead of digestion related symptoms persons with lactose intolerant could also have other symptoms like eczema, mouth ulcers, fatigue, headache, loss of concentration etc.
More gassiness:
This is also one important symptom of lactose intolerant issue. The production of hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide increases due to the fermentation of lactose in colon. Point is in those persons with lactose intolerant issues, colon micro-flora becomes more efficient in fermenting lactose to acids and gases. As a result, more lactose is being fermented in the colon. This increases gassiness and flatulence.
Bloating and stomach pain:
These are said to be common symptoms caused due to lactose intolerant issue. The lactose that is unbroken passes through the gut and reaches colon. Short chain fatty acids along with methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide are released due to fermentation in colon. This leads to bloating and stomach pain.
Diarrhoea:
Diarrhoea is increase in the stool frequency, liquidity and volume. The volume of water in the colon gets increased and by this the volume and liquid content of the stools increases due to lactose intolerant issue. This issue is more common in the babies. Gases and short chain fatty acids are released due to fermentation in colon and some of these acids get absorbed back in the colon again. It must be noted that these acids and gases release the amount of water that the body releases into colon.
